The peninsula of Methana was inhabited since Neolithic times (5000 BC). There are 55 archaeological sites. Some of the most important are:

• Ancient Acropolis- Paliokastro. Therein lies the ancient city of Methana, leaving us today parts of the walls of the citadel.

•The Castle of Fabvier at the Strait. Was built in 1826 by French officer Charles Fabvier.

•The Walls of Nikias. At the narrow isthmus there are parts of the fortifications built by the Athenian general Nikias during the Peloponnesian War (425 BC)

• Mycenaean settlement (14th-13th century BC.) According to the findings it was a place of worship - possibly of Neptune.
